Philanthropy 1-2-3
As individuals with time, talents and treasures, Kappas first support our sisters; second, we participate in local service projects; and third, we serve the greater good.
The Collier County Alumnae Association has supported the Kappa Kappa Gamma Foundation with financial gifts and Rose McGill magazine subscription sales to help fund scholarships, confidential aid, education and training, and support of our two museums.
Collier County Alumnae Association received the "Most Outstanding Association" certificate during national Convention in June 2010 for its contributions from 2008-2010. Our Association always supports the national Kappa initiatives such as The Rose McGill Fund and Reading Is Fundamental. In addition, the Board votes annually on which local non-profit organizations will receive our financial support.
In March of 2011, our Association bought 87 books for the entire Kindergarten at Estates Elementary School, which is located in Golden Gate Estates. This school's enrollment is composed of children primarily from low income families, many of whom have no books of their own at home. Five of our local alumnae members visited the school and read stories to the classes. They then presented each student with a book to take home. The children were delighted and the teachers and staff appreciated the efforts immensely.
Additionally, the Association joined with the Early Learning Coalition of Southwest Florida. The Coalition's Literacy Buddy program services preschool aged children. Every Kappa can become a buddy with a child. To do so, an alumna simply fills out the application form and returns it via mail, fax or email to the Coalition. A printable form is available on the following site: www.elcofswfl.org. Upon receiving the form, the Coalition matches the applicant with a child. The child then writes a letter to the volunteer indicating a specific book or a type of book that he or she would like to receive. The volunteer then purchases a book which meets the child's interest and writes a short letter back to the child. The book and letter are then sent to the teacher who passes both on to the child. This exchange takes place 3 times over the school year.
All members of the Collier County Alumnae Association are encouraged to help support Kappa Kappa Gamma's Reading is Fundamental philanthropic efforts by becoming a Literacy Buddy.
