The Seattle AA & Beta Pi chapter are thrilled to be a part of Girls Academy and bringing this unique experience for 11-13 year olds to our Seattle community! It is a pilot program launched by the Kappa Foundation in 2010. The 1 1/2 day retreat is tailored to meet the unique needs of middle school girls. The facilitation of discussions, small group mentoring, personal journaling and a literacy based community service project are just a few of the highlights of this program. We will be hosting this event for the third time on February, 8-9, 2014 with 50 young women at a middle school located in the Central District of Seattle.
Empowering and inspiring women has always been a top priority within Kappa Kappa Gamma, now we are reaching out beyond our Greek roots and making a difference in the Seattle community with girls who will grow up to be tomorrow’s leaders! This is an incredible opportunity for Beta Pi collegiate women to give back to the broader community through a dedicated program designed to help pre-teen girls explore who they are and the difference they can make in the world. Most importantly, it helps to break down barriers and stereotypes that are prevalent during the middle school age years.
Approximately fifty (50) Beta Pi actives will volunteer and be trained to be the role models and small group facilitators. They are supervised by Kappa alumnae who are trained education specialists and have participated in this forum previously. By the end of the weekend the Girls Academy participants will have established a relationship with their mentors that will hopefully continue to blossom for years to come.
Hosting Girls Academy comes with an $8,000 cost, broken up into segments of food, school facility rental and security, participant workbooks, printing, background checks, lead facilitators travel and postage for their materials. Both the Beta Pi chapter and the Seattle Alumnae Association are fundraising to share these costs and are seeking local business’s involvement as well. If you have a business contact that you would like to share, would like to volunteer your time, or make a donation, please contact us.
